Regina, SK –The Government of Canada’s legislation for restrictions and requirements on political loans will make political financing more accountable, uniform and transparent said Tom Lukiwski, Member of Parliament for Regina – Lumsden – Lake Centre.
“Our Government has always been committed to making our democratic institutions accountable and transparent,” said Lukiwski. “Today’s announcement is strengthening the accountability and transparency in political financing.”
Today, Minister of State (Democratic Reform) Steven Fletcher, introduced the Political Loans Accountability Act. The legislation would:
- Tighten the rules to ensure candidates cannot walk away from political loans.
- Put into place a new transparent reporting process for such loans.
- Ban unions and corporations from loaning cash to political parties and candidates.
- Limit the maximum individual contribution to these entities.
“For far too long, politicians have been able to not pay back their loans,” said Mr. Lukiwski. “Our government is ensuring that Canadians have confidence in our political institutions.
