Tom Lukiwski Announces Canada 150 Medals Program for Moose Jaw -Lake Centre-Lanigan
Tom Lukiwski, MP for Moose Jaw-Lake Centre- Lanigan today invited constituents in the riding to submit nominations for a special series of commemorative medals to help celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday.
This initiative has been launched at the local constituency level to help fill a gap after the federal Liberal government failed to undertake a formal commemorative program.
“Canada has a long tradition of using major anniversaries to honour individuals who have made significant contributions to their communities. The most recent was the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012. I don’t know why the federal government chose not to do this for Canada 150 but the people of Canada can and should continue to honour this tradition as a nation.”
Lukiwski is joining with other Opposition MPs in encouraging local people to nominate volunteers, community leaders and other outstanding individuals who have made a difference in people’s lives.
Although Lukiwski says the program will be driven mainly by the values of local people, the initiative will try to mirror the process used by the Queen’s Jubilee Medal.
“While it is strange that the Liberals didn’t issue a formal commemorative medal, I want to be clear that this isn’t about partisanship. We are seeking to enhance not compete with the Canada 150 celebrations the government has undertaken. We want to empower people at the grassroots level to join in celebrating the individuals and the qualities that make our nation great,” Lukiwski said.
Lukiwski asked that nominations be submitted before Sept 15, 2017 so that the medals could be issued at a ceremony in October.
